Initially, brainstorming for the 95/96 Fresno Pacific College (now University) annual report centered around the idea of community and working together. Since I didn’t want it to look like the college catalog already produced (with group people shots in a generic-looking theme), I started thinking of synonyms for working together. Gestalt eventually came to mind (definition used to reinforce the concept on the cover) and I thought of a way to incorporate this into a campus-related idea. This eventually lead to the Chemistry Department where chemical reactions often produce a sum greater than its parts. The annual report theme “unified elements” developed out of this idea and the definition of gestalt. The story was woven throughout the report in the form of a chemical reaction: the creation of nylon. The unified elements were also broken down into four categories, outlined in the table of contents, and incorporated throughout the report (vs. the usual throw-all-the-financials-in-the-back treatment) as follows: Summaries, Donors, Charts & Graphs and Achievements. The elements were color-coded and added variety and pacing for a better reading experience. Four spot colors were used to create quadtone photographs, taken by my colleague and friend (in black and white) and converted to quadtones in Photoshop.
